Happy Anniversary to the Class of 1969
Fifty Years ago today we Assembled for the first time in outsize striped uniform. Yesterday had been the final September bank holiday ever, today was bright and sunny. We sang some hymns - one was Praise My Soul. We collected brand new books and stowed them in brand new bags. The school was empty, term started the following day. Behind us lay balloon sculptures, party hats and all the tat of primary school, ahead lay ... the rest of our lives. We had thrilled at the moon landing, laughed at prince Charles being investitured. On the tele ( no colour transmissions for another few weeks) we watched grainy 625 line Robinson Crusoe and Magic Roundabout, while an evening entertainment included Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, Please Sir and variety shows which wouldn't see light of day on channel 4324 today, and we loved it. RIP all those we met five decades ago who from their labours rest. Did we inherit with the angels? Probably not...
